We Are the Church
Do you remember the little poem you sang in Sunday school…the one where you used your hands?
“Here’s the church. Here’s the steeple. Open the doors and see all the people.”
Jesus rewrites the jingle this way: “Here’s the people. They are the church.”
Today, the word “church” refers to something that we go to, something that we skip, or something that we have. To Jesus, the church refers to the people who are called to follow him.
Read through the first chapter of the book of Ephesians and see if this is an accurate description: The church is the people of God fueled by the power of God to fulfill the purposes of God.
We are not a building. We don’t need a steeple. We are the church.
