Checking in on Jennifer Bartlett

Bartlett15f_b

I Googled "Jennifer Bartlett" and was surprised to find a link to pastel drawings similar to the one above. In the early 90's, I became a fan of Jennifer's because of work that was quite different than this.

It's strange how these pastel drawings resemble a couple of canvases that I am working on right now.

Self-expression often brings to the surface connections between selves.

Brice McCasland-Artist

Brice is one the "Artists I Dig."  He is an artist living in the DFW area.  Check out his other work at www.bricemccaslandart.com.  Brice is also cool...a great reason to love his work.

This painting is titled "Consider the Raven."

New Art

I am finally in somewhat of a groove with regards to ministry/job/kids/husband/prayer/art.  I've finished 4 pieces of art over the past few months and have been happy with the images.  They are all acrylic on board...24"x24" birch.  As always, attention has been given to organic structure, layering, color and naivete/principle.  Have not settled on a title for the series yet...I'm up for suggestions.

Here are the first 3.

Michaelangelo's "Christ and the Woman of Samaria"

About the artwork

Michelangelo Buonarotti (1475-1564), sculptor, painter, draughtsman, architect and poet, was one of the major figures of the Roman High Renaissance. He was acclaimed in his own lifetime as a genius. His working career spanned over 70 years. 'Christ and the Woman of Samaria' was made when he was about 65.

This picture shows the incident told in the Gospel of St John (Chapter IV, verses 5-26) where Christ met the Woman of Samaria drawing water at Jacob's well. Several oil versions of this subject are known, all of which are copies - either from the original by Michelangelo or from the well-known engraving of the picture made by Nicholas Beatrizet.

Banner Image

The banner image at the top of this page is new, as is the whole blog design.  The photo was taken by my son Noah with his digitial camera.  He is only five!  He set up his Star Wars characters in various scenes and took pics of them.  Pretty amazing little guy.

Saginaw High

I have survived the first two days at Saginaw High.  I am teaching 3 classes of Art 1 and 1 class of Art 2.  There are 28-30 kids in the classes.

So far, so good.  I started the students drawing today...I forgot how frustrating that experience can be for someone who doesn't draw very much.  They all worked very hard...and were good sports about it.

I told them that an ugly drawing wasn't necessarily a bad drawing.  In fact, one of my favorite painters, Philip Guston, does ugly paintings.  Here is one of his paintings to prove my point...
